The headline grabs attention. What matters most is understanding what it really means for people who live with animals.

More than 47,000 dogs were included in the analysis. CBD use was seen mainly among older animals and dogs with chronic health conditions. Over time, dogs that received CBD frequently showed a decrease in the intensity of aggressive behaviors — a finding that deserves attention, but also caution.

For people who live with a dog, the practical question matters: can a CBD product really help with behavior? The study most directly connected to the news suggests an interesting association, but it still does not allow us to conclude that CBD caused the change.

What the news reports

The news is based on data from the Dog Aging Project, a large project that gathers information provided by owners about companion dogs. According to the analysis, CBD use — cannabidiol, a compound found in cannabis and hemp — was more common among older dogs and animals with conditions such as dementia, osteoarthritis, cancer, epilepsy, hip dysplasia, gastrointestinal problems, and chronic diarrhea.

Use was also more frequent in U.S. states where medical cannabis is legal. This does not show a biological effect related to where the dog lives; more likely, it indicates that local laws, product availability, and owner attitudes may influence who uses CBD.

The behavioral finding that drew attention was different: dogs with frequent and consistent CBD use for at least two years showed a reduction in the intensity of aggressive behaviors over the follow-up period, while non-users followed a more stable trajectory.

The news also states that other anxiety-related behaviors did not improve. The available scientific record specifically confirms the trend related to aggression, but does not demonstrate that CBD improves anxiety or agitation.

Why this distinction matters for dog owners

“Aggression,” “anxiety,” and “agitation” may seem like parts of the same problem, but they are not synonyms. A dog may react aggressively in specific situations — because of fear, pain, resource guarding, or discomfort — without having generalized anxiety. Likewise, an anxious animal may show no aggression at all.

For this reason, it would not be accurate to turn the headline into “CBD treats behavioral problems.” The available evidence itself does not support such a broad conclusion.

It is also relevant that many of the dogs using CBD already had chronic illnesses. Pain, mobility limitations, and cognitive changes can affect how a dog reacts to touch, other animals, people, or stressful situations. A dog experiencing less discomfort may appear less reactive, but that does not automatically mean CBD acted directly on aggression.

It is like observing that people who started using umbrellas arrived home less wet: the umbrella may help, but you would also need to know whether they went out on rainier days, used different transportation, or took another route. In animal studies, health conditions, routines, and concurrent treatments can all affect the outcome.

The main evidence addresses the question, but does not establish cause and effect

The Dog Aging Project study is the evidence that most directly supports the news report. It analyzed demographic characteristics, location, health status, and behavioral changes associated with CBD or hemp use in companion dogs.

The main finding is an association: dogs with consistent CBD use showed a decrease in the intensity of aggressive behaviors over time compared with dogs that did not use the product.

An association means that two things occurred together; it does not mean that one necessarily caused the other. To demonstrate cause and effect, a more controlled study design would be needed — for example, comparing similar groups of dogs receiving either CBD or a placebo, meaning a substance without the active ingredient, with clearly defined doses, formulations, administration methods, and other treatments.

In the observational study, the information came from owner-reported responses. This is valuable for identifying patterns in a large population under real-life conditions, but it also introduces important limitations. Products may have different compositions, doses may vary, consistency of use may not be the same for every dog, and some animals may be receiving other forms of care at the same time.

In addition, dogs using CBD already differed from non-users in terms of health status. This issue is known as confounding by indication: the reason an owner decides to give a product — such as pain, illness, aging, or behavioral changes — may itself also be related to the outcome observed.

Controlled studies show a more mixed picture

Smaller and more controlled studies help put the finding into perspective.

In one study involving 18 young, healthy dogs from a teaching colony, a hemp extract rich in CBD and CBDA — cannabidiolic acid, another compound related to CBD — did not improve anxiety-related behaviors after two weeks. This finding contrasts with the broader interpretation that CBD products can generally resolve anxiety in dogs.

Another study involving 20 shelter dogs with behavioral problems found no significant behavioral differences between the group receiving CBD oil and the control group. In that study, hair cortisol — a biological marker that may reflect stress responses over time — increased in the treated group. The study was preliminary and small, but it reinforces the need not to assume a general behavioral benefit.

There are also partially favorable findings in specific contexts. In a study involving 19 dogs repeatedly exposed to the stress of car travel, THC-free CBD was associated with reductions in some stress indicators at at least one time point, including cortisol, whining, lip licking, and qualitative behavioral assessments. However, the effects varied depending on the measure and the time of assessment. This is not the same as demonstrating reduced aggression or treatment of everyday anxiety.

Another study tested a treat containing CBD, L-tryptophan, and alpha-casozepine during a stressful car-travel situation. The increase in cortisol was smaller than with placebo, but the effect cannot be attributed to CBD alone because the product contained three potentially relevant ingredients.

What we still do not know

Important questions remain unanswered: which CBD formulation was used, at what dose, for how long, and in which dogs; which animals may benefit; which do not respond; and how other treatments influence the outcome.

A pharmacokinetic study — meaning a study that measures how a substance is absorbed and circulates through the body — showed that different oral CBD preparations produce different concentrations in dogs’ blood. This matters because “giving CBD” does not describe a single intervention: different products may expose an animal to very different amounts of the compound.

The available data also do not demonstrate that CBD is a solution for anxiety, agitation, or aggression. Aggressive behaviors deserve careful evaluation because they may be associated with pain, fear, illness, environmental context, or previous experiences.

What you can take away from this

The study involving more than 47,000 dogs found an association between consistent CBD use and reduced intensity of aggressive behaviors, but it did not prove that CBD caused the reduction.

CBD products are not all the same: formulation, dose, route of administration, and use alongside other treatments can vary and affect how much of the compound reaches the dog’s system.

If a dog shows aggression, intense fear, apparent pain, or a change in behavior, useful questions to discuss with a veterinarian include: Has there been any change in the dog’s health or routine? Are there signs of pain? What other products or medications is the dog receiving? The goal is to understand the underlying cause before attributing the behavior to a single factor or choosing an intervention.
