Giant-breed dogs can be deeply rewarding companions, but their size may come with important health and longevity considerations. The central question is: do giant dogs have shorter lifespans? Recent evidence supports a broad link between larger breed size and shorter longevity, although it cannot show that size alone is the cause.

Vet Times recently reported new veterinary research concluding that giant dogs face substantial lifespan and welfare disadvantages linked to extreme body size. The report raises a meaningful issue for people who live with, breed, or are considering acquiring very large dogs.
“Giant breed” is not a single scientific category used consistently across all studies. In everyday use, it often refers to breeds such as Great Danes, Mastiffs, Irish Wolfhounds, Saint Bernards, and some mountain-dog breeds. A dog’s expected health and lifespan can also vary substantially within any size group because of breed, inherited traits, body condition, environment, and access to veterinary care.
Why this matters for US dog owners
Large and giant dogs are popular in the United States, and prospective owners often compare breeds partly on expected lifespan and health needs. A shorter average lifespan is not a prediction for an individual dog, nor does it mean a large dog cannot have a good quality of life. It does mean that size and breed-related health patterns are reasonable factors to consider alongside temperament, housing, activity needs, and the practical costs of care.
Animal welfare is broader than how long a dog lives. It includes comfort, mobility, ability to engage in normal activities, and freedom from avoidable illness or distress. A study of age at death can inform the welfare conversation, but it does not directly measure a dog’s day-to-day quality of life.
What the scientific evidence actually shows
The strongest supplied evidence is a 2024 observational study of 4,957 dogs that died between 2004 and 2020 in Italy. Researchers used records from veterinary teaching hospitals and public-health institutions to examine longevity and reported causes of death.
The study found that small-sized breeds had significantly longer median longevity than larger breeds. It also found that neoplasia, a broad term for abnormal cell growth that includes cancer, was the most common cause-of-death category and occurred more frequently in several large breeds, including German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, and Boxers. Bernese Mountain Dogs were among the breeds with the lowest median ages at death.
This is direct support for the broad premise behind the news report: larger canine body size is associated with shorter lifespan at the population level and with differing disease burdens. The study is especially useful because it is recent, dog-specific, and examined thousands of deaths.
What it does not prove about giant dogs
The Italian study did not separately define and analyze a giant-breed category. Its comparison was between small-sized breeds and larger breeds, so it cannot quantify the lifespan difference specifically for giant dogs.
It also cannot establish cause and effect. An association means two patterns occurred together—in this case, larger breed size and shorter longevity. It does not prove that greater body size itself caused a shorter life. Breed genetics, inherited disease risks, selective breeding history, and other factors may contribute to the pattern.
The research did not directly assess welfare or quality of life. Therefore, it supports concern about longevity and cause-of-death patterns, but it does not independently demonstrate the full claim that giant size produces “substantial” welfare costs throughout a dog’s life.
One condition-specific study adds context, not a general answer
A 2023 study of more than 600,000 insured dogs in Sweden examined patellar luxation, a condition in which the kneecap moves out of its normal position. Most cases were medial patellar luxation, which was mainly associated with small-sized breeds. However, several large breeds had increased risk of lateral patellar luxation, and the breeds at highest risk of euthanasia related to patellar luxation included the Pyrenean Mountain Dog and Dogue de Bordeaux.
That finding shows that a serious orthopedic problem can affect some large or giant breeds and can have major welfare consequences. But it does not show that giant dogs generally have a higher risk of all kneecap problems, nor does it explain their overall lifespan. It is evidence about one disorder in one insured Swedish population.
How to interpret the findings responsibly
The available evidence supports a population-level pattern, not a verdict on every large dog. Some individual giant dogs live longer than expected, while some smaller dogs develop serious disease early. Likewise, the causes of death reported in a country-specific record set may not perfectly represent dogs in the United States.
For someone choosing a dog, the practical message is not that giant breeds should be avoided. It is that breed size should be considered honestly as one part of a long-term commitment. Questions about expected lifespan, known breed health concerns, responsible breeding practices, and the resources needed for a very large dog are all relevant to informed decision-making.
What remains unknown
More research is needed that uses a clear giant-breed definition, follows dogs over time rather than only reviewing deaths, and measures quality of life directly. Studies also need to separate the effects of size from breed-specific genetics and other influences. Until then, claims about the exact welfare cost of extreme size should be treated as plausible concerns rather than settled, universal facts.
